If you anticipate leaving home during a hurricane and have a pet, plan NOW for pet care.  Options include county Animal Control department, the Humane Society, private kennel, friends or family.

If you have a home health care nurse, notify your nurse where you will be during the hurricane.  Before the storm, discuss plans for re-establishing your home care once the danger of the storm has passed.

If you have extensive nursing needs (i.e. ventilator dependent, daily IV therapy), discuss emergency planning in advance with your physician and/or your home care provider.

If you are using any special electric equipment, make sure you have a back-up power source for emergencies.  Notify your electric company of your special needs.

If you evacuate to a shelter, take a copy of your current home care plan of care (if applicable), a primary caregiver, prescription and non-prescription medications, special dietary food or nutritional products (formula) as necessary, medical supplies and equipment such as insulin syringes, bandages, wheelchair, etc.

If you plan to stay home during the storm, make sure you have an adequate supply of water, medication, and non-perishable food.  Remember if your street floods, you may not be able to leave your home for several days.

If you require oxygen, be sure to check with your oxygen supplier about emergency planning.

Be sure to listen to the radio and TV for up-to-date emergency preparedness information.

If you weigh over 350 pounds and will require medical transportation for evacuation, please notify the New Hanover County Department of Aging at 910-452-6400. Please make sure you request Bariatric transportation.

Remember:  There is additional information about emergency preparedness in the front of your telephone book.
