How To Combat Chronic Wounds
Written by: Claudia Lewis, RN WCC
It's Wound Care Awareness week; and I want to emphasize the importance of wound care prevention and management, particularly in the Home Health care sector.
I've been a Registered Nurse (RN) since 1994, and have worked in Home Health since 1996. I've been at Well Care Home Health for a decade now; and the last seven years as the agency's Wound Care Specialist have been the most rewarding years of my nursing career.
Wound care is my passion. I enjoy seeing a wound in its initial, worst state and watching the phases of the wound healing until closure. That's progression! It's truly an amazing feeling to help our patients who suffer with wounds; and there are LOTS of patients who need skilled wound care management.
According to Healogics, Inc., the nation's largest provider of advanced wound care services, "an estimated 6.7 million patients are suffering with non-healing advanced wounds" this year. That equates to 35% of our patient population in Home Health.
If these statistics aren't enough to highlight the widespread wound epidemic, here's more:
- Each year, 2.9 million patients age 75+ acquire a pressure ulcer.
- 29.1M Americans are living with diabetes. 25% will experience a foot ulcer.
- 85% of lower limb amputations within the diabetic population are preceded by a foot ulcer.
- Patients with an amputation have a 50% mortality rate within 5 years.

These figures are staggering! So how do we as Home Health care professionals address the wound care problem? Prevention!
One of my favorite expressions is, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Bottom line - Prevention is the key to combatting wounds.
Here at Well Care, we achieve prevention through awareness and proper education. Our clinicians establish relationships with their patients and caregivers, then create a customized care plan and path to wellness. As an organization, we partner with wound clinics and physicians to ensure we minimize healing time.
While we focus on prevention, Well Care Home Health delivers the full wound care spectrum to patients including, negative pressure wound therapy, compression therapy and advanced wound dressings.
Our goal is simple: To provide the absolute best patient care experience, keep patients at home and out of the hospitals and Long Term Care facilities.
